The oil painting is by John Trumbull, depicting the presentation of the draft of the Declaration of Independence to the Second National Congress on 28 June, 1776. The painting was commissioned in 1817 and hung in the United States Capitol Rotunda in 1826, where it remains today.
In the center group of the painting, Thomas Jefferson, the principal author of the Declaration, is shown placing it before John Hancock, President of the Congress. With him stand the other members of the committee that created the draft: John Adams, Roger Sherman, Roger Livingston, and Benjamin Franklin.
The event occurred in the Pennsylvania State House, now Independence Hall, in Philadelphia.
